When asked how my blog has gotten the small success that is has, my first response with way too much excitement is always, Pinterest! Pinterest is one of the best ways to take your business or blog to the next level. With it being a massive search engine like Google, Pinterest allows users to reach traffic in a more dynamic way that lends itself to a more targeted audience.
So, let’s just jump right in and get started on boosting your web traffic and sales.
SETTING UP YOUR PROFILE
First things first, create an account if you don’t already have one. When setting up your profile, or revising it, make sure you have a business account.
If you are creating a new account:
Go to this link: pinterest.com/business/create/
Fill out your business name, email, password and then hit “create”
If you are converting an existing personal profile:
Login in to you account and go to this link: pinterest.com/business/convert/
Fill out your business name, website, and industry and then hit “create”
OPTIMIZE YOUR PROFILE
Next we want to optimize our profile so it can be found easily…
1. Business/Blog Name and Tagline & Description
As you can see on my profile I have my blog name + categories I focus on. Then for my description I have keywords integrated in a short description of what my blog offers.
In order to find what keywords are best for what you offer. Type in categories or themes you are planning on focusing on in your blog or business and then see what is suggested. Those bolded words are words you want to try to integrate into your short and precise tagline and a longer more detailed explanation of you and what you offer in your description.
2. Profile Picture
Some people suggest you use your logo others suggest using a high-quality image of yourself. Do what makes you happy or what works best for your business/blog. For me, my blog is heavily driven by my personality so I use my photo. If you blog is more business-minded, use a logo.
If you don’t have a logo, try creating one on Canva, Adobe Spark, or Fiverr, or get in touch and I'll work with ya!
3. Claim your Site
Next we want to claim your site which helps Pinterest users know that your site is verified and trustworthy.
Go to the 3 dots on the top right corner of your screen and click “Edit Settings”
Click on “Claim” and type in your web address
After this goes through you will be given an HTML code you need to manually enter into your sites HTML page. I understand this sounds daunting but it’s not. Depending on what server or host you are using, Google “how to add in HTML code into header of ______ hosted site”. For WordPress, I have downloaded the plugin “headers and footers” that allows me to put HTML code into my site seamlessly.
4. Set Up Your Boards
Now, we want to set up our personal boards. These boards should be as specific as can be! Create boards that your target audience would relate to, or things you absolutely love.
You want at least 30 boards that both relate to your brand and not. For me it would look like “Mental Health Tips”, “Chandeliers”, “Christmas decor”, “Vegan Chocolate Desserts”, “Dealing with Depression”, etc. These are boards that you control what is pinned inside of them as opposed to Group Boards, where multiple people add to the board.
As you create and add a personal board to your profile, be sure to click the “pencil” or edit icon to make sure you add in an SEO rich description full of keywords that are popular search terms.
For each of your non-blog or non-brand related boards (these specific boards will ONLY house your blog or web content), type the board name into Pinterest and pin the first 15 pins that appear. This helps Pinterest categorize what each board is about and recognize its content and theme.
Next, set your board covers. I personally like to have my boards all have the same color scheme which correlates with my blog, but this isn’t mandatory. Having it cohesive just is good overall branding tactics. To do this, go back to the edit icon on each board and choose your cover.
Lastly, go ahead and set up your featured boards on your profile. To do so, go to the 3 dots on the top right corner again and then click “edit profile”. Scroll all the way down to “Featured Boards” and hit “edit”. From there you can choose your top 5 boards that get the most hits or you expect to do well.
JOIN GROUP BOARDS
Group boards are a game changer in Pinterest marketing IF YOU ARE JUST STARTING OUT!
The purpose of group boards is to actively share your pins and others to help promote each other. This increases traffic, views, and sharing which we all want. Within these groups, you are sharing content with likeminded individuals whose audience is… you guessed it, your untapped target demographic.
To find group boards that are within your niche, go to PinGroupie. Once on the site you will see a search bar that you will enter in a keyword. For instance you can seach “beauty” or “makeup”, or “meal planning”, etc. Once you search a keyword you will then see a list of group boards within that niche.
You want to pay attention to all the information on the right side of the screen. You don’t want there to be too many collaborators because your pins most likely won’t be seen, but you do want a solid amount of followers so your pins are being repinned often and populating in multiple feeds. You also want to pay attention to the date it was updated. We want to make sure the boards are active.
Each group board will have instructions on how to join that board and the instructions typically are different for each one. Pay attention to what is being asked of you. You will either need to email them or message them on Pinterest directly. Sometimes you need to repin some of their pins and fill out a form from a link within the board description, just read carefully and follow as instructed.
If you don’t hear back, you can always follow up again as they may have missed your message or request.
Again, this is great for just starting out. Once you have a steady feed of pins, stop utilizing group boards as it can begin to work against you.
Now we want to start pinning our content.
I have found the best success with using Canva for creating branded pins graphics. They have tons of templates and are always updating their template library. Use colors that match your site, use consistent fonts, and stick to it! Create pins that are bold in text and eye-catching.
Once you have created your pin, MANUALLY pin it on Pinterest. I will talk more about this in my next post. There are sites and apps you can use to automate pins for you, but Pinterest wants you actively on their site. Continue re-pinning to your boards and build up your board libraries as well.
It is suggested that you create multiple pin graphics for one single post. Pinterest wants you creating new pin content. The site link can be the same but the image and graphic should be different! Multiple pins get you more hits so be strategic.
